This no obligation service has always been available within local hearing centre branches. ![]() Free hearing test - Freephone 0800 612 7992An NHS trial across Britain of 35,000 people aged 55-74 found routine hearing tests offered "substantial benefits" - BBC report on recent research by government adviser, Professor Adrian Davis The Hearing Test - what it involves* A hearing assessment is painless and straightforward. First, the hearing aid audiologist will talk to you about your background - your medical history, job, hobbies, etc - and any changes you have noticed in your hearing.* Then the dispenser will give your ears a thorough physical examination using an otoscope. * Next, you will be asked to listen to a series of sounds played at varying pitches and volumes through headphones. (Called a Puretone Audiology test.) * The results are entered onto an audiogram and the dispenser will show you the chart illustrating any hearing loss you may have. This also identifies any areas where your hearing can be improved. * With these results, the dispenser will be able to discuss with you the pros and cons of the alternatives available. * If assessment reveals a possible medical problem, the dispenser will advise you to see your doctor. THE CAUSE may well be a simple one and easily rectified, such as a build up of wax. In which case, a visit to your doctor or the hearing aid audiologist will quickly resolve the problem. Hearing tests take about an hour and are carried out in total privacy. However, if you prefer, it is quite normal to have a close friend or partner with you on the day. FREE HEARING TESTS: These are free of charge through our network of qualified hearing aid audiologists. There is no obligation to buy a hearing aid, but you cannot buy hearing aids unless you have a hearing test first. This is best practice in accordance with the Hearing Aid Council, and we recommend you do NOT enter into the supply of hearing aids unless you have a hearing test with - and are fitted by - a qualified professional.
